Ankit Khambhati, PhD

Assistant Professor
Neurological Surgery

Dr. Ankit Khambhati, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in Residence in the Department of Neurological Surgery at UCSF. He is trained as an electrical and biomedical engineer, and his technical expertise lies at the intersection of network neuroscience, machine learning, and complex systems. Khambhati's research seeks to understand the organization of human brain circuits and how disruption of these circuits give rise to functional brain network disorders.

At UCSF, Khambhati leads a research program specialized in the development of network neurotechnology to map and modulate the neural pathways that facilitate large-scale communication within interconnected brain networks. His research group uses a multi-modal approach that integrates network science and control theory with direct brain electrical recordings, implantable devices, and neurostimulation to develop strategies for brain network control and repair. As a collaborator on highly interdisciplinary teams, he investigates the translational potential of this technology for treatment-resistant neuropsychiatric disorders.

Khambhati earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and his doctorate in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroengineering at UCSF. He is a member of the American Epilepsy Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
